Best.Quotes.Ever. (other inspirations too)

I’ve got a thing for anything that inspires me or makes me laugh. I bet you do too. Otherwise you wouldn’t have clicked on a post titled “Best.Quotes.Ever.” Here are the best quotes, poems, and other inspirations from my “collection” (an old, faded, stained book with scribbled quotes).

These are in no particular order. They aren’t grouped by category or theme (shocking! I know) except that I moved a few of my absolute favorites to the beginning. Otherwise these are listed simply in the order I captured them starting in 1992.

Share your favorites in the comments. Better: share your own.

The Ship

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!”

“Gone where?”

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her detained port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!” there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here she comes!”

And that is dying.

Colors

My skin is kind of sort of brownish, pinkish, yellowish, white

My eyes are grayish, blueish, green,

But I’m told they look orange in the night.

My hair is reddish, blondish, brown,

But it’s silver when its wet.

And all the colors I am inside,

Have not been invented yet.

As the old man walked down the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him, picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally latching arms with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left out on the beach in the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles, and there’s millions of starfish,” countered the other, “You can’t possibly make a difference, can you?” The young man looked at the starfish in his hands and then gently threw it into the waves, “It makes a difference to this one.”

After a while, you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security and presents aren’t promises.

And you begin to accept your defeats with your eyes open and your head up, with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child. And you learn to build all your roads today because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure, that you really are strong, and you do have worth, and you learn, and learn, and learn.

With every goodbye, you learn.

Holdin’ on I don’t know what to do ‘cause the pieces won’t fit into place

*****************

Love is friendship that has caught fire. It takes root and grows, one day at a time.

Love is the quiet understanding and mature acceptance of imperfection. It is real. It gives you strength and grows beyond you to bolster your beloved. You are warmed by his presence, even when he is away. Miles do not separate you.  You have so many little films in your head that you keep replaying. But near or far you know he is yours and you can wait.

Love says “Be patient. Don’t panic.”   Plan your future with confidence. Love is not based on sex. It is the maturation of friendship that makes sex so much sweeter. You must be friends before you can be lovers.

Love means trust. You are calm, secure, and unthreatened. He feels your trust and it makes him even more trustworthy. Love never steers you in the wrong direction. Love is elevating. It lifts you up. It makes you look up. It makes you a better person than you were before.

~ Ann Landers

*****************

What’s it about?

Life isn’t about keeping score. It’s not about how many friends you have, or how many people call you. Or how accepted or unaccepted you are. Not about if you have plans this weekend, or if you’re alone.

It isn’t about who you’re dating, who you used to date, how many people you’ve dated, or if you haven’t been with anyone at all. It isn’t about who you have kissed.

It’s not about sex. It isn’t about who your family is, or how much money they have. Or what kind of car you drive. Or where you are sent to school.

It’s not how beautiful or ugly you are. Or what clothes you wear, what shoes you have on, or what kind of music you listen to. It’s not about if you hair is blond, red, black, brown, or green. Or if your skin is too light or too dark.

Not about what grades you get, how smart you are, how smart everybody else thinks you are, or how smart standardize tests say you are. Or if this teacher likes you, or if this guy or girl likes you. Or what clubs you’re in or how good you are at “your” sport. It’s not about representing your whole being on a piece of paper and seeing who will “accept the written you”

Life just isn’t.

But life is about who you love and who you hurt. It’s about who you make happy or unhappy purposefully. It’s all about keeping or betraying trust. It’s about friendship, used as a sanctity or a weapon. It’s about what you say and mean, maybe hurtful, maybe heartening. About starting rumors and contributing to petty gossip. It’s about what judgments you pass and why. And who your judgments are spread to.

It’s about who you’ve ignored with full control and intention. It’s about jealousy, fear, ignorance, and revenge. It’s about carrying inner hate and love, letting it grown and spreading it.

But most of all, it’s about using your life to touch or poison other people’s hearts in such a way that could have never occurred alone. Only you choose the way those hearts are affected – and those choices are what life’s all about.

clinging to their own roots…

deep, hard, determined,

intertwining

growing closer

The 92 year old, petite, well poised lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and make up perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved into a nursing home today.

Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.

As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on the window.

“I love it,” she stated with enthusiasm of an 8 year old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room, just wait.”

“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied, “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged…it’s how I arrange my mind.”

“I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice, I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do”

Autobiography in 5 Chapters

1.

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I fall in.

I am lost…I am hopeless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

2.

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I’m in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

3.

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it there.

I still fall in…it’s a habit

My eyes are open

I know where I am

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

4.

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I walk around it.

5.

I walk down another street.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make on our spiritual journeys is to assume that everyone else around us wants to be as happy as we are, and that they want it badly enough to do all the work required to get there. *****************

“What Will Matter”, by Michael Josephson. How will the value of your days be measured …when you are gone?

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear.

So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.

It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave.

What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories of those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters

She let go

Without a thought or word, she let go.

She let go of the fear. She let go of the judgments. She let go of the opinions swarming around her head. She let go of the committee of indecision within her. She let go of all the ‘right’ reasons. Wholly and completely, without hesitation or worry, she just let go…

No one was around when it happened. There was no applause of congratulations. No one thanked or praised her. No one noticed a thing. Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.

There was no effort. There was no struggle. It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad. It was what it was, and it is just that. In the space of letting go, she let it all be.

A small smile came over her face. A light breeze blew through her. And the sun and the moon shone forevermore.

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

My brain and heart divorced a decade ago, over who was to blame about how big of a mess I have become.

Eventually, they couldn’t be in the same room with each other. Now my head and heart share custody of me. I stay with my brain during the week, and my heart gets me on weekends.

They never speak to one another.

Instead, they give me the same note to pass to each other every week and their notes they send to one another always says the same thing:

“This is all your fault”

On Sundays my heart complains about how my head has let me down in the past and on Wednesday my head lists all of the times my heart has screwed things up for me in the future.

They blame each other for the state of my life There’s been a lot of yelling – and crying

SO,

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my gut who serves as my unofficial therapist.

Most nights, I sneak out of the window in my ribcage and slide down my spine and collapse on my gut’s plush leather chair that’s always open for me.

~ and I just sit sit sit sit until the sun comes up

Last evening, my gut asked me if I was having a hard time being caught between my heart nd my head.

I nodded. I said I didn’t know if I could live with either of them anymore.

“My heart is always sad about something that happened yesterday, while my head is always worried about something that may happen tomorrow,”

I lamented. My gut squeezed my hand.

“I just can’t live with my mistakes of the past or my anxiety about the future,” I sighed.

My gut smiled and said: “in that case, you should go stay with your lungs for a while,”

I was confused, – the look on my face gave it away.

“if you are exhausted about your heart’s obsession with the fixed past and your mind’s focus on the uncertain future, your lungs are the perfect place for you. There is no yesterday in your lungs, there is no tomorrow there either,

there is only now,
there is only inhale,
there is only exhale,
there is only this moment,

there is only breath,

and in that breath you can rest while your heart and head work their relationship out.”

This morning, while my brain was busy reading  tea leaves and while my heart was staring at old photographs I packed a little bag and walked to the door of my lungs.

Before I could even knock she opened the door with a smile and as a gust of air embraced me she said “What took you so long?”

To those I love

If I should ever leave you whom I love

To go along the silent way,

Grieve not,

Nor speak of me with tears,

But laugh and talk

Of me as if I were beside you there.

For I am loving you just as I always have,

you were so good to me!

We cannot see beyond,

But this I know:

I loved you so –

Twas heaven here with you.

My Mission Statement

To be in flow as often as possible. To live my values—be kind, be grateful, be joy, be free—every day. To enjoy the journey and love the moment.

To touch other people’s lives in a meaningful way that helps them (and me) heal and grow. To give a voice to people who don’t use their voice. To be an upstander. To spend my time in this world creating dialogue and discussion instead of one-sided debates. And to help people share their opinions in a way that doesn’t mute others. To be a multiplier at home, at work, in my community.

To achieve what Ralph Waldo Emerson demanded, “To know one life has breathed easier because you lived”. But for me to multiply this to many lives. “
